The mentor is the father figure for his crew. His job is to bring the crew together, teach them what it means to be a "big time" D-1 crew, help them work together, communicate, study, prepare and do all the things that successful D-1 crews do. He provides a macro, high level view of mechanics with an emphasis on communication, game management and flow. He gives tips and insights into what it takes to advance in officiating and is a career resource for his officials. He develops a personal relationship with each member of the crew to help them succeed as a unit and as individuals. He provides honest feedback to help each crew member be the best he or she can be on and off the field. During SASA, he defers to the position trainers regarding position-specific training. He defers to the video evaluators regarding video breakdown.
